THE LIVING FIELDS sign to Candlelight
Candlelight Records today confirms the signing of multi-national progressive doom-death outfit The Living Fields. The trio, with members based in Chicago, London and Ottawa, has received early acclaim via their self-released 2004 and 2007 recordings. Now working on their Candlelight debut, currently titled Running Out of Daylight and planned for release in early 2009, the band looks to take the next step in their still developing career.
“Candlelight has been very successful working with bands that defy convention,” says guitarist Jason Muxlow regarding the band’s choice of label. “Their discography is filled with milestones. Their legacy undoubtably speaks for itself and we're thrilled to be part of their future.”
Originally formed in 2002 by Muxlow, The Living Fields have had their sound likened to that of My Dying Bride, November’s Doom, and others. But with a twist. Together with vocalist Jon Higgs (also of Monsterworks) and drummer Chad Walls (Brodequin, Enter Self), Muxlow and The Living Fields explore a wide range of sounds and styles utilizing a palette of guitar, drums, bass, strings, piano, and spine-chilling vocals that will amaze fans and critics worldwide. "True epic metal of a most norm-shattering aspect," says Terrorizer of the band’s self-titled debut. “Mandatory,” adds Metal Maniacs.
The Living Fields are the latest to join London-based Candlelight’s growing US roster, a strong concentration of artist development for the rising label. Home to all catalog from Emperor, Ihsahn, Zyklon, 1349, Insomnium plus early recordings from Opeth and Burzum, Candlelight’s American roster now includes Obituary, Crowbar, Daylight Dies, Abigail Williams (new album this fall), Absu, Averse Sefira, Sothis and Sourvein. The label is distributed exclusively in the United States via Caroline/EMI, PHD Canada for the northern country and Plastichead Music for Europe.

Founding member Dross (drums) says of the new album, "If you are into aggressive, polished black metal that is well executed then you're going to love 'De Oppresso Liber'. We've been able to capture some incredible performances and couple them with some very talented engineers. We wanted to make a record that we would be genuinely proud of and we've accomplished that."

07. The Cold Disconnection

A fixture on the Los Angeles area, SOTHIS released through independent channels its four-song mini-album in late 2004. A regional tour was set up with performances throughout the Southwest; the shows inspiring two limited-release DVDs that capture the band's impressive stage personnae. The band's self-financed video for "Sinister Nation" has seen over 10,000 views since its premiere and further showcases their commanding live performance.
Featuring vocalist Drogoth, guitarists Scathe and Nylock, keyboardist Asperia, along with Dross, SOTHIS is ready to expand their already growing fanbase. Signing with Candlelight Records, maintaining offices in Philadelphia and London, the band teams up with a growing label dedicated to development. Dross says, "We are extremely happy to be working with Candlelight Records. If you think about it there is really no better home for us. Candlelight and SOTHIS have the same goals and vision for the future; I just can't tell which of us is more determined to reach them."
Vocalist John Tardy of the legendary Florida death metallers OBITUARY has issued the following update:
"This year's Wacken [Open Air] festival in Germany was unbelievable. We really had a good time and appreciate all the fans support. I think the Wacken crew all did a great job and we thank them for inviting us to this year's event! It was a sold out weekend, somewhere around 80,000 people!!!!
"We played in Finland the night before and it was one of those...off stage at 2:00AM, lobby call at 4:00AM, flights at 6:00AM and on stage at Wacken 4:00PM...and they lost our luggage so Frank [Watkins; bass] and I had to go on stage in the only clothes we had...awesome! At least all the equipment showed up or we really would have been fucked! The show in Finland was great, sold out and sick! Thanks to all of you that came out to see us!
"We now have a few days off that we are spending in Hamburg, Germany before we take off to Copenhagen, Denmark for the next show. At least we don't have to fly. Actually we are done flying until we head back home. Only two shows left so I hope you can make one of them and remember we will have the new 'Left To Die' EP with us!" - Order your copy here
»Obituary website »Obituary MySpace DAYLIGHT DIES - "Lost To The Living" Raving reviews continue Mixed at Fascination Street Studios/Sweden by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia), Lost to the Living features nine new songs from this cherished, North Carolina-based doom metal band. Working with Travis Smith (Amon Amarth, Soilwork) for the album’s packaging, it promises to be another fan and critic favorite. "We all feel confident this is the strongest album we've made," says drummer Jesse Haff. "The material is a mix of beautiful, melancholic leads and harsh dissonant rhythms; all the despair-driven hooks and dark atmosphere you've come to expect from us." Formed in 1996, Daylight Dies drummer Haff with guitarist Barre Gambling slowly crafted songs that would make their appearance on the band’s 2002 debut No Reply (Relapse). Their second album, the impressive Dismantling Devotion, was released March 2006 via Candlelight Records. Revolver Magazine called it "as thoughtful and compellingly musical as it is bleak and vengeful... essential." A US tour with Moonspell and friends Katatonia, the band including vocalist Nathan Ellis, bassist Egan O’Rourke, guitarist Charley Shackelford, together with Gambling and Haff completed 2006 on an all-time high.
"a bid for a seat in the pantheon of the giants of melodic, gothic death doom" - Terrorizer "An emotionally draining tour-de-force that commands unchallenged attention" - MetalReview.com "Masterful" - Revolver "A career masterwork" - MetalSucks.net "A stunning example of bleakness and beauty combined" - Teeth of the Divine
"One of the most sophisticated singular doom purveyors west of the Thames" - Pre-Fix
ABIGAIL WILLIAMS Completes Debut Album

»Abigail Williams MySpace AVERSE SEFIRA as main support on the Gorgoroth tour
Since its inception in 1996, the name of AVERSE SEFIRA has reverberated through the underground with relentless intensity.
This Texas trio has become notable within the American Black Metal vanguard as they struck in Europe and North and South America with a succession of tours alongside veteran acts Dark Funeral, Candlemass, Watain and 1349.
After three acclaimed albums AVERSE SEFIRA signed with Candlelight Records in 2006.
This new partnership resulted in the re-release of their 2001 album, Battle's Clarion, and now their fourth full-length outing, Advent Parallax.
This album generated a wide degree of appraisal and exposure for the band and has further cemented their reputation as a revered and heavy-hitting unit.
In 2008, AVERSE SEFIRA appeared on a successful US tour with Rotting Christ, Belphegor, and Immolation in support of their album.
They will tour Europe with Gorgoroth in Autumn, 2008, and a new album will announced in the following year.
The band had the following to say about the tour.
"We are pleased to join Gorgoroth in their crusade of terror and infamy. This will be our largest incursion on the European continent and it is a great opportunity to bring chaos and perdition to so many regions."

»Averse Sefira website »Averse Sefira Myspace Guitarist Ville Friman of the Finnish metal band INSOMNIUM has issued the following update:
"We are currently rehearsing new material, which will become fourth INSOMNIUM album at some point. At the moment, we have four songs ready and lots of semi-ready material in store just waiting to be trained and arranged properly. We have also booked Fantom studio (where 2006's 'Above the Weeping World' was made) for March 2009 and the new INSOMNIUM album is scheduled for autumn 2009 release. We know that it is long wait but at the moment we do not have any choices if we want to guarantee the quality over quantity.
"Reason for such long interval in releasing albums is mainly due to touring and difficulties in getting a proper rehearsing place. And yeah, also the general laziness and simple misfortunes have played their roles. Year ago, we had one decent place in Joensuu which we renovated to pretty good shape from a scratch. Only day after moving our stuff in, we got hit by a flood, which was caused by heavy summer rain. Luckily our gear did not suffer any serious damage. In addition, we have been moving (again) inside Finland to different cities and this has made it difficult to find rehearsing place from a reasonable distance for all of us. Thus, this year has served us a well-deserved break to get everything back together and our minds concentrated to the new album.
"About the songs already in good shape; one is really epic one with clock ticking almost over 10 minutes. Great song with vibe of last two AMORPHIS albums with more heavier edge and INSOMNIUM style of lead work. The second new song turned out to be quite long one as well but in my opinion this one holds more 'hit' potential in it, mainly because of simple arrangement and catchy melodies. Could be maybe described as being somewhere between 'Bereavement' and 'Last Statement'?!? Or what the hell I know; sounds good though. Third song sounds bit like a tribute to SENTENCED because the melodies bear similarity to the melancholy heard in 'Amok' or 'Down' albums. Otherwise the song is pretty slow, depressing and quite doomy. Just the way we like it. Fourth song ready is bit faster and riff-orientated. Composed partly in the last North American tour. Potentially a good live song. We'll see."
»Insomnium website »Insomnium MySpace OCTAVIA SPERATI on hold.
"At our last band meeting, OCTAVIA SPERATI decided to put band activities aside/take a break. We have reached a point where we have decided to put more time into other projects both within music, studies and families among other things for a while. We will all continue playing music, but we will take a break from the normal 'Octavia-life'. If there are any news from any of us we will of course let you know asap.
We are all looking forward to playing the lovely outdoor festival Lost Weekend near our head quarters Bergen on Friday 1st of August, and will take the break after that. We are sorry to say that we will have to cancel the Dames of Darkness festival in Birmingham in September.
Hope you all have a great great summer! :-)"
» Octavia website »Octavia MySpace 1349 return to the US as support to Carcass
Norway’s 1349 will return to the US to participate on the highly anticipated Carcass tour this fall. Beginning September 5 the tour, also featuring Necrophagist, Suffocation, Aborted and Rotten Sound, marks the band’s third visit to America in support of their third and most successful album, Hellfire. Seven performances as of press time are confirmed with more to be announced in the coming weeks.
“One of the best pure black metal releases of 2005,” says Blabbermouth. “Hellfire roils and roars with something approaching bloodlust... even sicker and more merciless than its predecessor,” adds Decibel Magazine. Released October 2005, Hellfire has become a milestone recording for the now decade-old band. Far surpassing sales of their earlier recordings (2003’s Liberation and 2004’s Beyond the Apocalypse), the album was highlighted by the making of their first video (for the album track “Sculptor of Flesh”). The clip received multiple plays from MTV2/Headbangers Ball as well numerous regional broadcast and cable outlets.
From their beginnings 1349 were touted as a band to watch. All Music Guide called them, “a band ripe with promise,” on review of their debut, Liberation. Featuring outspoken vocalist Ravn, guitarist Archaron with bassist Seidemann and studio drummer Frost (Satyricon) the band would tour Europe with friends Aeturnus and Red Harvest before settling down to record their second album. A busy touring schedule would follow the release of Beyond the Apocalypse, this time adding prestigious festivals to their accomplishments (to date the band have performed at Wacken Open Air, Graspop, Summer Breeze, Hole in the Sky, Inferno, Hellfest, With Full Force, and the annual/travelling No Mercy Festival). Following the release of Hellfire, the band was invited by Celtic Frost to support them on their Fall 2006 US tour. The band wasted no time pulling together a blistering set that would impress the band’s growing American fanbase. In early 2007 the band returned to headline the US for the first time. Nearly twenty shows would see the band visiting cities across the country. Earlier this year the band performed at the annual South-By-Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas as part of the Norwegian arts showcase. 1349 return to the US as writing continues on their fourth, still untitled, album.
Confirmed performances include:
05 – Palladium, Worcester MA
06 – Nokia Theater, New York NY
07 – Le Medley, Montreal QC
08 – Opera House, Toronto ON
09 – Starland Ballroom, Sayreville NJ
10 – Sonar, Baltimore MD

CROWBAR guitarist/vocalist Kirk Windstein has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"Hey, rockers and rockettes. It's been a while since I made a post on here, but I feel it's time to let you know what's going on. I've got about eight songs' worth of riffs written so far and will be jamming with Tommy [Buckley, drums] and Pat [Patrick Bruders, bass] soon on these ideas.
"2009 will be the 20th anniversary of CROWBAR!!! We will be putting out a new CD and tour[ing] endlessly on this thing. I literally want to play every country that's got electricity!!!
"Believe me, CROWBAR is far from over. It will never die as long as I'm walking this Earth. So be prepared for the heaviest band in the world to destroy your senses very soon.
"As always, thanks to the legions of underground fans who have loyally supported us for the last 19 years. Year 20 will be the biggest yet."
»Crowbar website »Crowbar Myspace NEBELHEXE is in the studio and has set "Dead Waters" as the title for her upcoming record. In the meantime, here's what she said about it:
"Hmm, what can I say about the new songs? Difficult to describe... very own, very dark, very organic, very strange? This time I just wanted to make music for myself, not trying to aim at a certain scene or a certain genre... just something for me. The result is very different from Essensual, for example, where I aimed to try out new more commercial styles and a more open 'pop-like' sound. Nope, I am done with that. So Dead Waters certainly turned out to be more organic, kind of like a mix of dreamy ambient, tribal, and a darker form of country... or something like that... maybe it was the influence of that Texas snake beer we had down at the studio (cool stuff!) and the hot weather... :-) Anyway, I am really happy about the new songs and I am eager to put some of them on myspace soon...
The songs of course, as usual, embrace many of my deep and dark thoughts, feelings and recent experiences... (I can be quite eh 'naughty' sometimes... or at least end up in pretty weird situations ;-). The vocals are much more intense too. The lyrics will be up soon and a further update will follow... so keep posted :-).
